August 31 | How Do I Discover God’s Will For My Life?

Proverbs 25:2, “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.”

You will discover God’s will for your life as you spend time in prayer every day (asking and listening) and by reading your Bible to confirm the directions you believe God gives you. Jesus promised in Matthew 7:7, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”

God is always willing to reveal His will for our lives, we just have to be willing to ask, seek and knock until He does.

As today’s passage states, we should be eager to search out the “matters” of God. It is a good thing to understand God’s plan and will for our lives. That is why I believe consistent personal devotions are important for the disciple. Everyday we should be honest to share with God the questions and concerns of our lives and then quiet our heart and listen to what God is saying to us. Jonathan Goforth said, “In all things seek to know God’s will and when known obey at any cost.”

Often times God will whisper to your heart a word that will give you a clear direction. Then when you obey Him and see the positive results, you will begin to more readily listen and obey God’s future directions. As you continue to follow this pattern, you will build a strong relationship with God. He will be your greatest advisor (John 16:13).

Don’t be afraid to “miss God,” it happens to all of us. Repent, change course and listen more carefully next time. Remember, all things- even our mistakes, work for the glory of God. This is not an excuse to intentionally keep making mistakes, but a confidence to know that God is able to use our mistakes for His glory! (Romans 8:28)

One time I was considering leaving the church I was pastoring to pursue my education. I asked God in prayer, “What should I do?” God spoke to me to stay and see the good things He had in store. Sadly, I doubted God’s word for me. However, God sent another person to confirm His Word and then I finally listened. I learned from that situation to trust God’s whispers. Thankfully, God was kind enough to shout it out loud when I was being stubborn.

In just a short time, many great things began to happen in the church, such as; our church was given the chance to host a Bible college, I started traveling overseas to train pastors and my wife was able to stop working and join me fulltime in the ministry!

I would have missed all that God had for me if I wasn’t able to hear and obey God’s will for my life. Therefore, no matter what questions you may have about God’s direction in your life, remain patient and wait for Him to speak to you. God promised He would lead and guide you into green pastures with waters that will refresh your soul (Psalm 23:2-3). Jesus also said in John 10:27, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” Always be ready to hear God’s voice and follow Him!
