Public Evangelism

Research shows that more than half of Jesus’ earthly ministry was spent preaching and teaching in public. Today’s disciple should both heed Jesus’ command to go into the “roads and country lanes” (Luke 14:23) and follow His clear example!

Public evangelism is all about Jesus and being led by the Holy Spirit. It is impossible to preach the gospel without Jesus or the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Luke 4:13 records, “Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.” Also, people said of Jesus in Luke 24:19, “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people.”

Jesus said to His disciples before He ascended to heaven, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8) Therefore, if we want to preach like Jesus we must be filled and led by the Holy Spirit.

SERIES TEXT

1 Corinthians 9:24-27, “24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. 27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.”

Consider this video as inspiration to those who run races to win!

PUBLIC EVANGELISM

COMMAND: Mark 16:15-20, “15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

19 After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. 20 Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.”

DEFINITION: To preach the gospel to strangers in public like Jesus and the apostles.

SEVEN KEYS TO PUBLIC EVANGELISM

  1. The Gospel Defined
  2. The Nature of the Gospel
  3. How the Gospel is Spread
  4. The Penalty for Not Preaching the Gospel
  5. The Four Main Parts of the Gospel
  6. The Twelve Methods of Preaching the Gospel
  7. Being Led by the Spirit in Using Gospel Methods

1-THE GOSPEL DEFINED

The Gospel is defined as, “the ‘good news’ concerning God’s glory and humanity’s salvation by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ,” Mark 1:15 & Ephesians 2:8-10.

2-THE NATURE OF THE GOSPEL

The Gospel in its very nature is, “the power of God unto salvation,” Romans 1:16-17.

3-HOW THE GOSPEL IS SPREAD

The Gospel is spread by preaching, Romans 10:9-17.

4-THE PENALTY OF NOT PREACHING THE GOSPEL

The penalty is woe and blood upon the Christian’s hand if they do not preach the Gospel, 1 Corinthians 9:16 & Acts 20:26.

5-THE FOUR MAIN PARTS OF THE GOSPEL

  1. God: Created man (with free will possessing the power of “self-identity & freedom”) for a loving relationship with Himself, Genesis 1:26, 3:8-9.
  2. Man: Willing sinned and separated himself from God and came under the just wrath of God, Romans 3:9-23.
  3. Jesus: Died on the cross and bore the judgement of God for sinners so that by His resurrection all might live and not perish, John 3:16 & Romans 5:8-9.
  4. Faith: By putting one’s full trust in God and confessing Jesus as “Lord,” a person is restored to fellowship with God and free from the wrath their sins (high treason against the King) justly deserve, John 3:16 & Romans 10:9-10.

6-THE TWELVE METHODS OF PREACHING THE GOSPEL (AS SEEN IN THE GOSPEL OF MARK)

  1. Casting out demons, Mark 1:23-28.
  2. Performing miracles, Mark 1:33-34.
  3. Sharing meals, Mark 2:16.
  4. Telling parables, Mark 4:1-2.
  5. Meeting needs, Mark 6:39-44.
  6. Rebuking sin, Mark 7:9, Mark 9:20-23.
  7. Public proclamation, Mark 10:1.
  8. Ministering to children, Mark 10:14-15.
  9. Giving people the cost of discipleship, Mark 10:21.
  10. Serving, Mark 10:43-45.
  11. Debate/Confrontation, Mark 11:29.
  12. Sharing about the end times, Mark 13:4.

7- BEING LED BY THE SPIRIT IN USING GOSPEL METHODS

The Holy Spirit will guide the believer, like He did Jesus, to choose and act upon the best method to open someone’s heart to the message of the Gospel, John 5:19-21 & John 14:12. Paul said in Romans 8:14, “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” Therefore, all gospel preachers are to be Spirit led!
