Saints in the Church

The Greek word for “saint” (hagios) is used over 60 times in the New Testament in reference to all of God’s people. It never stands for a separate class of people in heaven who are to be prayed too. Therefore, what is the local church according to Paul? It is the gathering of saints under the leadership of overseers (elders) and deacons.

Philippians 1:1, “To all the saints in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons…”

What are the roles of these elders and deacons as leaders in the church? To operate in the five fold ministry gifting of the Spirit. What are the five gifts? (1) Apostle, (2) Prophet, (3) Evangelist, (4) Pastor, & (5) Teacher. What is their job? To perfect the saints for ministry and the building up of the Body of Christ!

Ephesians 4:11-12, “11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ…”

As a result, are you a saint being perfected in a local church with elders and deacons operating in the five-fold ministry? I pray that you are- no place I’d rather be! If that is you, here is Paul’s prayer that I pray over your life…

1 Thessalonians 3:11, “May he [Jesus] strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his saints.”

Lastly, here is my heart of blessing to all God’s people throughout the world who read this post, from the author of Hebrews…

Hebrews, 13:24-25, “24 Salute all them that have the rule over you, and all the saints. They of Italy salute you. 25 Grace be with you all. Amen.”

In my own words, “We from MPI Chicago, salute all the saints and your leaders who work among you- grace be with you all! Amen.”
